Titanic BibliographyThe bibliography here is under construction, so please visit again soon - I'm adding more books very frequently at the moment. All the opinions expressed here are my own, so you should check out the books yourself before buying or not buying as the case may be.
This page is intended to be a review of Titanic related books and publications that I either own or have read. If you want to know about Titanic, reading as much as you can is really the only way to do it. I would suggest that you try and borrow from your local library any books you are considering buying, before you purchase them. Many Titanic books are quite expensive, particularly if you are a young person or student. Some books are of dubious quality, and you don't want to discover this after you've shelled out good money for them :-) In case you are wondering, the illustration on the left is a scan of my copy of The Deathless Story of the Titanic, which was a special edition of Lloyds Weekly News shipping magazine, produced in 1912 within a few weeks of the disaster. There is a fascinating web site by Dr. Jay White, called Titanic Instant Books which has scans showing the covers of, and information about, books produced soon after the disaster.

"Titanic: Safety Speed and Sacrifice" by George Behe
Despite being only 80 or so pages long, this book is a real gem. Written by George Behe, a highly regarded amateur Titanic historian, this book is the result of meticulous research which has uncovered a wealth of new evidence suggesting that White Star Line's standing orders putting safe navigation above all other considerations might well have been ignored. Was a cover-up attempted after the tragedy ? Read Titanic: Safety, Speed and Sacrifice by George Behe, then make up your own mind. "A Night to Remember" by Walter Lord
This book is a "must have" for anyone interested in Titanic, and was the inspiration for the 1958 film of the same name (the preceding link is to the Internet Movie Database). Walter Lord is widely (and quite rightly, in my view) acknowledged as one of the greatest Titanic writers of all time. The book contains numerous illustrations and, like George Behe's book, full references to source material. If you only buy one Titanic book, this should be it. "Titanic - An Illustrated History" by Don Lynch and Ken Marschall
Ken Marschall is renowned for the quality and depth of research he puts into his Titanic paintings, and was one of the advisors on James Cameron's Titanic. Don Lynch is a widely respected Titanic historian, and he ensures that this book is as factually correct as possible, and doesn't fall into the trap of repeating myths as though they were reality, like some other historians do. The book is very well written and contains plenty of reading material, but it is also crammed with superb illustrations, making it an excellent choice for any Titanic enthusiast. "The Last Days of the Titanic: Photographs and Mementos of the Tragic Maiden Voyage" by Edward Eugene O'Donnell, Frank Browne, Francis Browne
This book is crammed with unique photographs taken by Father Francis Browne, who's uncle paid for him to take a trip aboard Titanic on the Southampton-Cherbourg-Queenstown (now Cobh) leg of the voyage. A wealthy American couple befriended the young priest, and offered to pay for him to go to New York and back too. Luckily for him and us, his uncle practically ordered him to get off at Queenstown as planned, and his pictures form a priceless record of Titanic at the peak of her glory. "The Maiden Voyage" by Geoffrey Marcus
This book by Geoffrey Marcus is in the same league as Walter Lord's "A Night to Remember". Superbly well researched and written. It is out of print at the moment, having originally been published in the 1970's, it was reprinted in 1991. If you find a second hand copy at a second hand book shop, buy it, or try the Amazon link (the book picture) to see if it has been reprinted. "The Night Lives On" by Walter Lord
This is Walter Lord's follow on book to "A Night to Remember", and is every bit as well researched and written. It brings the story of the story right up to date, 30 years after the publication of his original book. The discovery of the wreck itself on Sunday September the 1st 1985, the subsequent investigations of the wreck, and discovery of more eye=witness testimony have enabled Walter Lord to produce another classic book of great interest to anyone wanting to know more about the legendary liner. "The Sinking of the Titanic" by Logan Marshall, Edited by Bruce M. Caplan
This book was first published in 1912, not long after the sinking. It raises some fascinating questions about whether there was a fire on board since Southampton, and if so, did it contribute to the disaster? The book was out of print for many years until Bruce Caplan, a great character and life long Titanic historian, was given a tattered copy of the original. He has had it reprinted, and provided a comprehensive index. If you would like a copy, phone 1-800-461-1931 and have your credit card ready. Bruce often tours Titanic exhibitions, and is always ready to answer questions from the general public, and discuss Titanic with fellow enthusiasts. "I'll See You in New York: Titanic, the Courage of a Survivor" by David Haisman
A biography of Titanic survivor Edith Haisman by her youngest son. The author is well suited to tell a survivors story as he himself served as a lookout on many of the White Star Liners over the years. He also lived in Southampton, and got to know many of the relatives of the other survivors personally. 1st printing. Brisbane: Boolarong Press. 1999. ISBN: 0646332368 . This book can be obtained by visiting David Haisman's web site or sending him e-mail at Titanicanme@aol.com .
