Titanic Bandsmen's Memorial, Broken Hill, New South Wales, AustraliaThe Titanic Bandsmen, led by Wallace Hartley, really did play on to almost the very end, by all accounts. We will never really know whether Nearer My God, to Thee or Autumn was the last tune they played, but their courage can be in no doubt. Here's the inscription:
Erected by
The Citizens of Broken Hill
As a Memorial
To the Heroic Bandsmen
of the Steamship Titanic
Who Played to the End
[first few bars of NMGTT]
Calmly Faced Certain Death
Whilst Women, Children and
their Fellow Men were being
Rescued from the Wreck of
that Ill-Fated Vessel off
the Coast of Newfoundland
on April 15th 1912
